| Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Medicare Part D) was introduced first as a discount card between June 2004 and December 2005. The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 (P.L. 108-173) began on January 1, 2006 better known as Medicare Part D. The Part D plans are offered differently than Parts A&B in the fact that the private insurance companies administer the benefits of the program. The patient must decide which company best covers the medications they take.
