Your doctor has prescribed a medication that is to be used in a small volume nebulizer, the directions on the medication box explain how your doctor wants the medication to be taken.
Due to the different types of medication that can be used in the SVN (Small Volume Nebulizer), we will use unit dose vials as the example.
First, the machine needs to be unplugged into the proper outlet. Then open the neb kit, which consists of tubing, which is to be hooked into the outlet port of the machine and to the inlet port of the neb kit (may be on bottom or side of bowl).
Second, take top off of the bowl and squeeze the unit dose medication into bowl (sometimes there may be more than one medication that goes into the bowl. If so, use the prescribed stock solution first, then top off with a unit dose vial). Put the top of the machine back on.
Third, put mouthpiece into one end of the T-piece and, if in kit use the accordion piece on the other end of T-piece, then attach T-piece to the top of the bowl. Now you are ready to take a treatment.
Find a comfortable place to sit and take your treatment. Turn unit on and breath mist into lungs in a normal, but slightly deeper breathing pattern, time of treatment will vary with the type and amount of medication that is used.
When medication is used up, the kit will stop misting and the machine should be shut off.
As soon as possible, wash the kit out with hot soapy water and rinse with clean water and let air dry on paper towel.
Once a day you will need to mix one part white vinegar with three parts hot water in a small dish, just big enough to cover the neb kit parts. Let them soak for 30 minutes, rinse them and let air dry. This is to disinfect the kit and is very important.
The neb kit is a disposable unit and should be replaced at one time or another, depending on the type of machine you have. Some filters are washable, some are disposable. Once a month for washable filters and 90 days on disposables is normal. A dirty filter will keep treatment from helping you as much as it should.
